Spelthorne 4 Hartley 3

HARTLEY THROW IT AWAY
Following last season's success in the FA Cup expectations were high but were soon evaporated as we gave away two goals in the last few minutes to be dumped unceremoniously out of the cup at the first hurdle.

It all started so well for the boys playing some good football through the midfield and it was not too long before Sam Argent headed us in front.
But it was not long before the Spellies equalised with a free header from a corner with our defence non-existant.

However Hartley were well on top and from a long kick from our keeper Rossi Cook ran on to it to score, but shortly afterwards he missed with an easy header, and also narrowly missed with a free-kick which would have made the half-time score more realistic.

The second half was a very disjointed affair with Hartley playing well for five minutes and then seemingly going to sleep for the next ten which enabled the opposition to scramble an equaliser.
Then in a period of inspired inter-change play Stowie again put us ahead and it seemed only a matter of time before we increased the lead, but then we went back to sleep and a speculative 35 yard shot from their centre-half somehow went under the body of Bradshaw. Then the final insult was in the last minute they scrambled the winner with the Hartley defence all at sea.

I am sure the management are as shell-shocked as were our supporters not only in the manner of losing but to see four goals scored against us out of about six attempts at goal all afternoon.

I am sure that this defeat is a wake up call to both the team and the management, and also as it is the first game of the season it can be put to bed and hopefully forgotten and that Farnham next Tuesday will take the full brunt of our wrath!!!!

Thanks Nick for keeping us exiled supporters up to date. I fear what the result might mean for our season financially - hopefully a good FA Cup run wasn't built into the budget! On the pitch I've little doubt the boys can soon put to bed that unexpected calamity, and we still have the Vase to have a go at! Football has a way of bringing us all quickly back down to earth with a bump after last season.

It couldn't put us back into the cup (that still hurts) but well done boys for the 3 points and clean sheet at Farnham - not an easy place to get a result, as we found last season. A good response to Saturday's disappointment.
