Eleven goals but it's the 3 points that count
On a quick, slippy pitch, Badshot Lea went ahead after some poor defending allowed Louie Hibbert to find space just inside the box, he had time to compose himself and finish into the corner. We were very disappointed with that particular goal, Tuffs has worked very hard with the boys in defending central areas over the past few weeks.
No, no, your eyes are not weary from the night before, that was the actual scoreline last night!
It took us another 15 minutes to level the scoring when Duffers steamed into the penalty box and was brought crashing down by a clumsy tackle from their centre half. Something Millers had called pretty early on that width would be important in this game. The first opportunity Duffers got, we got something from it. Sam Argent converted the penalty.
Badshot had only just set themselves back up when Hartley broke away again to put themselves in front with a Ross Cook goal. Cooky then helped himself to a hat-trick before half time, each one demonstrating the various qualities he has. The work rate that he has added to his game has increased his performances no end, partly down to his new found belief and focus in his game but also down to our skipper, Sam Argent. Sam's work rate is outstanding, he completely sets the standard and creates a chain reaction throughout the squad. The two of them have created a great partnership both on and off the ball and still have more to give, which is a (pleasantly) frightening thought.
Hartley conceded after the break after some continuous pressure applied by Badshot. Hartley responded by scoring yet another goal, this time by the ever impressive Argent. Three goals over the course of 10 minutes were then scored by a resurgent Badshot Lea, but the storm was calmed when Steven Duff helped himself to a goal to settle the nerves.
A strange game with lots of good football played. We said from the outset that Badshot Lea would be a good outfit and we expect they will be challenging for honours come the end of the year despite their early disappointment in their first two games. So to take 3 points in any manner can only be a positive.
We were disappointed at the end of the game, as were the boys. We have a team that demands more from each other and from themselves, and to ship so many goals in the manner we did was disappointing. On the plus side to win when you're not near your best is still a good sign, especially when you're scoring in the numbers we did yesterday evening. Rest assured we will be working hard to tighten our ship before Saturday's FA cup game at Chinnor.
Lastly, it was great to see so many Hartley faces, we appreciate your support. [DB]
