Hartley bow out early of the Hampshire Cup
Hartley travelled to local neighbours Tadley Calleva on Tuesday evening in the Hampshire Cup. Danny Dolan's sides are always competitive and hardworking, so we knew we were going to up against it. Especially when they have the class of players like Mario Nurse in their ranks.
A goal from Toby Jannaway gave Hartley a life-line but we were knocked out on penalties in the Hampshire Cup on Tuesday night.
Hartley handed a debut to 16 year old goalkeeper, Jake Maddock. Jake who has impressed us during training and certainly has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to work hard. Tadley started brightly with a real urgency about their play. Hartley took too long to get started as we made poor decisions and gifted possession. Callum Eagle led the line at the back and his vocal support and organisation kept our shape which we benefitted from.
It was Tadley who opened the scoring when a through ball was collected by the Tadley striker and sent over the on running Maddock's head.
At half time we addressed a few issues, mainly down to decision making and taking a risk not only on the ball but in the positions they took on the pitch. The introduction of Everiss made a big impact whose pace and directness caused them instant problems.
We were very pleased to offer further debuts to Charles and Edward who are products of our youth team. They showed real quality both on and off the ball and, most importantly, played with confidence. Hartley deservedly got back into the game with a header from Toby Jannaway at the back post following a deep cross.
Hartley created a number of other chances towards the end of the half but couldn’t hit the back of the net. So it boiled down to the lottery of penalties. We sadly missed one of our opening five, but young Jake made a superb save down to his right hand side to bring us back level. We sadly missed our 9th and ex Hartley player Jason Kingston put Tadley through to the next round.
Congratulations once again to Jake, Charles and Edward. That is now six players who have made their senior debuts from our Youth team this season. [DB]
