AFC Portchester v Hartley Wintney, Hampshire FA Saturday Senior Cup sponsored by BSA Regal, Quarter-Final. Tuesday 18th January 2022
Report by David Graham

Hartley Wintney bowed out of the Hampshire Senior Cup after being beaten by a solitary second-half goal at Portchester.

AFC Portchester play in the Wessex Premier League, two levels below Hartley Wintney. The Row gave starts to youngsters Toby Raggett and Lucias Vine, as well as loanee from Woking FC, Jake Rumble.

The first chance arrived for the Royals on 8 minutes when Lee Wort took advantage of a quick throw and his shot from the edge of the area was saved by Row keeper, Luke Williams.

Hartley responded and 2 minutes later Jordan Edwards showed good skill coming in from the left, and his deflected shot from a tight angle brought out a good save from home keeper, Steven Mowthorpe.

Hartley had the edge and on 18 minutes an Edwards free-kick saw the Royals struggle to clear, and Matt Drage's effort was saved by Mowthorpe.

Portchester had a chance when a long ball found Steve Ramsey in the clear. However, he was unable to get full control of the ball and his effort went wide of the goal.

The final 15 minutes of the half saw the Row lay siege to the Royals goal. Approaching half-time, an Edwards corner resulted in a massive scramble in front of the Portchester goal. Toby Raggett and Dan Fitchett had shots blocked close to the goal line.

In added time, an Edwards free-kick ended with Adam Allen delivering a powerful shot which Mowthorpe did well to save. As the pressure continued, Matt Drage almost scored when his close range effort hit the post.

The second-half started as the first-half had ended, with the Row pressing for the opening goal. However, on 54 minutes the Royals striker, Lee Wort, produced a mercurial piece of skill. A long ball from defence saw him control the ball coming over his shoulder, knock it up and volley a shot which went about a yard wide.

Three minutes later, a long free-kick from Drage found Raggett who set-up Aaron Goode, but the experienced central defender shot wide.

On 61 minutes Portchester came close. George Barker made good progress down the left and his cross found former Hartley player, Marley Ridge, who saw his shot crash off the crossbar.

The Royals had a decent spell and a cross from the right by Ramsey hit the top of the crossbar. They came close again on 71 minutes when Zak Sharp won a race to the ball with the Row keeper. After forcing the ball past Williams, Sharp's shot from a tight angle went across the face of the goal.

Portchester finally got the breakthrough goal on 74 minutes. A cross from the right found LEE WORT on the left. The striker cut in and his low shot went in at the near post.

The Row spent considerable time around the Royals penalty area but were unable to break down Portchester's resolute defence. Meanwhile the Royals came close on 85 minutes when George Barker took a shot coming in from the left which was deflected just past the post.

Hartley pressed hard but, as was the case throughout the match, they were unable to create a clear-cut chance. [D Graham]

It was good to give the new signings match time and despite the result - the Club has to be focused on retaining Step 3 status in the League. Another excellent report from David Graham. Enjoy the trip to Yate and securing more points guys! :-)
