Harrow Borough v Hartley Wintney, Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South. Wednesday 7th December 2022
Report by Tyler House

Hartley Wintney slipped to a fourth straight defeat when they were beaten 1-0 by Harrow Borough.

On a bitterly cold night at Earlsmead, midfielder Billy Leonard scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute.

Following the Row’s four-goal loss to Weston-super-Mare last Saturday, manager Ian Selley made five changes, which included recalls for Killian Barrett, Josh Webb and Benjamin Purcell.

Two new loan signings were also involved, with midfielder Leon Baker and striker Shae Hutchinson going straight into the starting line-up, having joined from Havant & Waterlooville and Farnborough respectively.

A bright start from the Row saw them go close early on. In the 11th minute, Jonny Efedje’s right-wing cross was met with a header from Louie Paget, which was tipped around the post by Harrow’s Jacob Knightbridge.

From the resulting corner, Purcell found Toby Nevile, whose first-time strike went just over the bar.

The Row had another chance soon after when the hosts gave away possession in their own half, but when Kingsley Eshun found Efedje with a pass, the winger’s long-range effort went high and wide.

A minute later, Harrow took the lead against the run of play when Leonard capitalised on a rare error from Matt Drage. The Boro’ midfielder gained possession on the edge of the Hartley penalty area before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

On 24 minutes, Harrow went close again through Keegan Bloom, but his fierce 25-yard shot went wide of the goal.

At the other end, a cross from Paget found Paul Hodges, but his tame header was gathered by Knightbridge.

Three minutes later, some loose play by Boro’ presented Hartley with another chance. Efedje found space on the edge of the penalty area but was unfortunate to see his shot sail just over the bar.

Hartley created very little in the final part of the half, while Harrow could have increased their advantage after Montel Brown’s mazy run, but his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Barrett at the near post.

Harrow remained in the ascendancy after half time, and Shaun Preddie went close from a corner, but his near-post header was off target.

The Row then introduced substitutes Anis Nuur, Reese Jones and Jake Rumble as they pushed on in search of an equaliser, although they had to wait until the 74th minute for their first clear-cut chance of the half.

After good play down the left, Webb delivered an inviting cross for Nuur, who made a good run into the box but was unable to get the decisive touch.

Soon after, a similar move involving Nuur presented Eshun with the chance to score, but his close-range effort went across goal and failed to test Knightbridge.

Six minutes from time, a chance at the other end fell to Leonard, but his shot was parried away by Barrett.

Hartley’s final chance to salvage a result came just a minute later, but a low shot from Eshun was met with an outstanding save from Knightbridge, who dived to his left and pushed the ball away at full stretch.

Harrow held on to claim all three points, lifting them up to 15th in the league table. Meanwhile, the Row remain in 21st place ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Swindon Supermarine. [Tyler House]
