Tiverton Town v Hartley Wintney, Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South. Saturday 12th November 2022
Report by David Graham

Tiverton Town edged out Hartley Wintney thanks to a single second-half goal from home striker, Lucas Vowles.

Tiverton started slightly the better and on 7 minutes a long shot from Niall Thompson brought out an easy save from Adam Desbois in the Hartley goal.

Play became very even, with defences firmly on top. On 22 minutes, Lucas Vowles for Tivvy managed to get through two challenges on the right and set-up Matthew Britton, who saw his shot from the
edge of the penalty area comfortably saved by Desbois.

Hartley had a good share of the match but were unable to create a meaningful chance on goal, while Leighton Thomas for Tiverton fed Thompson on the half hour, and his effort led to a comfortable save by Desbois.

The Row started the second period brightly but still unable to make any impression on the Tivvy defence. The first Tiverton attack on 52 minutes saw a dangerous cross from the left by Joseph O'Loughlin take a deflection off a home forward and go wide.

On the hour, a well worked Tivvy free-kick routine on the right saw Britton feed Thompson, whose
dangerous cross was scrambled clear by the Row defence.

Tivvy made a triple substitution which slightly improved the home side, and striker Kyen Nicholas made his long awaited return as a substitute for Hartley.

The breakthrough goal arrived on 74 minutes. A move down the left involving Oliver Mehew saw a high cross into the Row penalty area. LUCAS VOWLES did well to control the ball and shoot home from 12 yards. (1-0)

Hartley had a chance on 80 minutes from a free-kick some 25 yards out. Josh Webb took the kick but it travelled narrowly over the crossbar.

Tivvy substitute, Louis Morrison, managed to bundle through a couple of tackles before shooting over the bar on 87 minutes. Like most of the second-half, the Row finished with most of the possession but
unable to dent a resolute home defence. [D Graham]

David spoke with Hartley Wintney manager, Ian Selley, after the game.
"We kept with the same game plan from the previous week. The first half was very even, perhaps slightly in favour of Tiverton, but I thought we were the better team in the second period.
"It's always disappointing to lose, of course. We didn't offer enough in attack, but there were a lot of positives to be taken in terms of our overall play. The Tiverton defence played well and were hard to break down. But when you view the league positions and the gap between the teams, that gap was not reflected in the match."
