Saturday 7th January ‘17
Combined Counties League - Premier Division
Report by David Graham

Hartley strengthened their position at the top of the league with a comfortable win despite playing the last 25 minutes with just 10 players.

It was a historic day for the Bedfont Sports Recreation ground, this being the last game to be played on grass, with a 3 G pitch to be installed. In the event, the pitch was in very poor condition.

The Row started strongly and on 2 minutes Bedfont’s young debutant goalie, Harvey Cheadle, was called into action. A free kick on the left saw a powerful shot from Dean Stow which Cheadle did well to parry. The Hartley players reacted quickest and in the melee that followed Liam Eagle, George Hallahan and Steve Noakes all saw efforts blocked on the line.

On 7 minutes Cheadle was again called into action when a strong shot from Louie Paget took a deflection and the young keeper did well to push the ball over the bar. A minute later Liam Eagle set up Adam New who shot over. Then just another minute later the home side were almost gifted the lead when Liam Eagle over hit a back pass, which saw Jake Maddock scramble back to keep the ball out.

Hartley resumed on the attack and a Steve Laidler pass sent George Hallahan through on a one-on-one with Cheadle, which the Bedfont stopper did well to save.

Continuous pressure was eventually rewarded for the Row on 21 minutes. Jack French went on a good run across the 18 yard line before setting up Dean Stow, who fired home the opener. (0-1).
Four minutes later it was almost two when a good cross from Adam New was headed against the post by Sam Argent. Then on 39 minutes George Hallahan fashioned a chance for himself but his effort brought a good save from Cheadle.

Completely against the run of play Bedfont equalised with a fine goal. A good move was set up down the right and James Greenwood went on an overlapping run. His low cross found Simo Mbankwi who fired into the roof of the net from close range (1-1).

On the stroke of half time George Hallahan got on the end of a long cross and his header brought a good save from Cheadle who tipped over.

It took the Row just two minutes to regain the lead. George Hallahan forced Cheadle into a good save; the keeper pushing the ball round for a corner. The flag kick from Dean Stow found the head of Steve Noakes, who headed home unchallenged. (1-2).

On 50 minutes good interplay between Jack French and George Hallahan saw the former shoot just past from 18 yards. Bedfont responded on 62 minutes when Simo Mbankwi went on a long run with the ball and finished with his parting shot going into the side netting.

After 65 minutes the Row were reduced to 10 men when Dean Stow received his second yellow card following a strong challenge in midfield. Steve Noakes expressed his disappointment at the decision to Mr.Singh, the referee, and received a yellow card. Three minutes later the Row almost increased the lead. A free kick from Steve Laidler found the head of Steve Noakes, who brought out a good save from Cheadle.

Hartley made the points safe with a third goal on 69 minutes. The persistent George Hallahan got reward for his efforts when his strike from 25 yards found the net off Cheadle’s right post. (1-3).

On 75 minutes Hartley almost increased their lead when Sam Argent out-jumped Cheadle and saw his header blocked on the line. George Hallahan, following up, was unlucky not to force the ball home. Three minutes later Steve Laidler went on a long run from his own half and fed Sam Argent, who was unlucky to see his shot go just over. However, Hartley added another goal before the end.

With Bedfont attacking, a long ball from defence found substitute Dec Shuttleworth. The Row striker out muscled the Sports' defender before running on and firing past the out-rushing Cheadle. (1-4)
The win moves Hartley clear by 18 points at the top of the league. [D Graham]

Not wanting to tempt fate but just got to say it after today's win... only just into the New Year and 18 points clear at the top! That's some achievement boys, at this stage of the season. Of course it's where we are at the end that matters, but well done to all the players and coaching staff. Another big win in the Hampshire Cup and the cigar would defo have to come out (and I don't even smoke!)

A great result at Bedfont which is usually one of our bogey grounds where over the last few years we have fought some very turgid games there so it is a great pity I had to miss something special.
I see that we had another sending off this week, is this perhaps because referees have been told to try and level the playing fields and to make to the league more competitive!!!!
With Noaksey again scoring and being booked will he get to his ten bookings or ten goals first??
Unfortunately I am away for the rest of the month so hopefully in m y absence we will progress further in the Hants Cup (closer to a day out at Southampton) and also in the Aldershot Cup as the lads deserve another trophy this season and put some icing on the cake.
