Hampshire Senior Cup – 2nd Round
Report by David Graham

Hartley progressed into the 3rd Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a resounding win over Brockenhurst.

The visitors arrived with a youthful and much changed side from the team which played the Row last month in the FA Cup. The first half resembled the ‘Siege of the Alamo’ as Hartley created and missed countless chances. The Badgers' defence worked overtime and, but for some remarkable goalkeeping from Ed Kitcher, the Row tally could have been approaching double figures. In the event they had to be content with three before the interval.

On 15 minutes good play between Jack French and Sam Argent released winger James Tennant, who chipped the ball over the 'keeper into the net. (1-0).

Approaching the break, the same James Tennant latched onto a pass from Argent and, cutting in from the right, rifled a shot low into the net. (2-0).

There was still time for the Row to add a third. A corner on the right from Tennant saw an unfortunate Badgers defender head into his own net. (3-0)
Half Time: Hartley Wintney 3 Brockenhurst 0

Hartley used their substitutes during the half and added three further goals. On 51 minutes, Paul Hodges was pulled down in the penalty area and Sam Argent converted the spot kick. (4-0).

The best goal of the night came from Callum Eagle on 62 minutes. Sam Argent sent a cross field pass into the path of the defender, who sent a strong, low drive from distance into the net. (5-0).

The last goal of the evening saw James Tennant complete his hat trick with a clinical finish on 80 minutes after being set up by Sam Argent. (6-0).

There was still time for the Badgers to muster up a good effort from lively substitute Mark Barker, bringing out a good save from Paul Strudley in the Row goal. [D Graham]

With Brockenhurst preparing for their FA Vase game away at Godalming Town on Saturday by seemingly resting a few players, our almost complete domination of the game isn't too surprising. Even so, you have to work hard to dominate a game the way we did last night and so full marks to the boys.

James Tennant was outstanding from start to finish and led by example with his finishing; a hat-trick and an assist from his corner, not a bad night's work. Overall it was a good workout to help us sweep away the frustrations of Saturday, and the boys never let up which was good see. Just a shame there were so few people to see it; an expensive evening from the club's point of view, but can't fault the value for money delivered by the players, including Brockenhurst keeper Ed Kitcher who pulled off some terrific saves.

On to Saturday and the visit of table-toppers AFC Dunstable, then away on Tuesday night to third-placed Egham Town where our last visit ended in lots of broad smiles in the season of Egham's promotion and our Great Escape. Ah, the memories.
