Hartley off the mark with "a stunning win"
What a great start to the season, especially against unknown opposition who had been relegated from the league above, and with the new signings blending in well with some of last year's team. Although we started off as we finished last season, and should have been a goal down in the first couple of minutes when the defence seemed nervous. It took nearly half an hour of scratching around before we started to play more to our potential and relax a bit and it was no surprise when young Duffy headed powerfully home from a corner. 1-0 half time.
The new signings made excellent debuts and Joe Paris was deservedly awarded man of the match.
As the second half progressed, we started to dominate the midfield and keep possession, and ten minutes in Ross Cook outsprinted the defence on the right, cut inside and finished with an exquisite left foot curler.
From then on it was mostly one-way traffic, which allowed all the substitutes to be used, and for Sam Argent to score a quick double, one a glancing header and the other a close range shot, both created again from the right, before Mr Duff finished the scoring with a freekick from the edge of the area.
I like the way that Tuffs has got the boys running back to defend once they had lost the ball, which brought much more stability to the back four where Liam Eagle, on his debut, was outstanding and chaperoned the other 'rookie' centre back, the ageless Noakes. All the new signings made excellent debuts and Joe Paris was deservedly awarded man of the match. Even Millers was stuck for words afterwards and could only say "A stunning win".
It is going to be an interesting next few weeks, because when those players who have recovered from injury and from suspension are available, the management team are going to have a tough time in keeping the squad happy, because they can only choose 11! Next up Badshot Lea on Tuesday, who are a bit of a bogey team for us, so lets get behind the boys and hope that they can keep up the good work. Up the Row! [NV]
